When Henry Ethelbert Sigismund Reeves arrived in Miami from the Bahamas in the early 1920’s bound for New York to purchased a printing press, he did not know that his life was about to take a significant turn. Encouraged by friends who had previously relocated from the Bahamas and seeing untapped opportunity Reeves decided to settle his family in Miami.
Along with two other associates he opened a printing business and also began to publish a newspaper. This first newspaper venture was unsuccessful, but in the true entrepreneurial sense he did not let deter him. He eventually began The Miami Times on September 1, 1923.
The Miami Times has been published without fail every week for the past seventy years. It has played a significant role in black Miami’s history providing information to the community which would have been virtually unobtainable otherwise. Even today, it continues to provide information about the black community that cannot be found in other publications.
Reeves was truly a visionary who created an entity which is a family business, passed down through the generations. Henry E.S. Reeves park, located at 600 Northwest 10th Street in Miami, is named in his honor.
