Sadie Mae Hall (1915-1991), born Sadie Thompson, was born in Micanopy, Florida, spent her youth in Deerfield Beach, Florida, and later moved to Miami, Florida. She graduated from Booker T. Washington High School in 1936. She wished to become a teacher, but lacked the funding to go to college, so instead worked in a variety of service jobs. Her hobbies included cooking and sewing. She was an active member of St. John Institutional Baptist Church, where she served as the chair of the Deaconess Board.
Ms. Hall obtained a Miami Beach ID card in 1962 in order to work as a maid at the New Yorker Hotel, Miami Beach, Florida. The Miami Beach Police Department issued Miami Beach ID cards. In order to obtain the card it was necessary to be photographed and fingerprinted and to provide blood work. The card lists the card holder's signature, ID number, name, place of employment, address, age, height, eye color, hair color, build, date issued, and the name of the issuer. Ms. Hall's card lists her as working at the New Yorker Hotel.
Mr. Robert L. Hall, Sadie Hall's son, is Associate Director for Education at the Smithsonian Institution's Anacostia Community Museum.
