Historical Note: Josephine D. Mackey was the first principle at Nathan Young Elementary School (formerly known as the East Opa-Locka Elementary School), located in the Opa-Locka community, from 1960 through 1972. She was active in many social and civic organizations. Mackey was named "Woman of the Year"in 1974 by the Opa-Locka City  Commission for her "tremendous  unselfish activities in behalf of the less fortunate."
