“NOT FOR OURSELVES, BUT FOR OTHERS”

Since its inception, 50 years ago, Alpha Gamma Chapter has operated as a component of Eta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated, a non-profit organization that, as its motto states, is "Not for Ourselves, But for Others." It was April 8, 1967, when twenty-eight women organized and chartered the Alpha Gamma Chapter in Miami, Florida. These esteemed women, who were largely school teachers and educational administrators, identified with the great works of Eta Phi Beta and wanted to make a difference in their communities as well, and include:

Alice Dixon, Althea Sample, Augustus Caesar, Barbara Brooks, Barbara Killen, Barbara Rogers, Bernice Mask, Betty Page, Bettye Timmons, Doris Lynch, Emma Spicer, Georgia McMahon, Gladys Solomon, Gloria Randolph, Gwendolyn Waters, Helene Smith, Iris Walker, Jacqueline Robinson, Jacquelyn Saunders, Jacquelyn Williams, Jean Solomon, Julia Tynes, Laura Bethel, Lenore Mikell, Marion Allen, Ruth Bethel, Thelma Harris, Thelma Rolle

The chapter was created in the home of Mrs. Georgia McMahon, a retired teacher who lived in Liberty City. It was a great start and only the beginning for these Alpha Gamma ladies. In the summer of 1968, not two full years since its chartering date, members of Alpha Gamma, under the leadership of Chapter President Julia Tynes, attended the Boule in New Orleans, Louisiana. It was at this meeting that the ladies recommended a change that would forever alter the dynamics of the Sorority. Because there were already four chapters in Florida, Alpha Gamma requested to establish another region to include: Alpha Gamma, lota, Delta and Nu Chapters. From that recommendation, the Southeast Region was created and Alpha Gamma went from being a part of the Southern Region to the Southeastern Region.

Another addition to Eta Phi Beta Sorority occurred in 1971 when an energetic and talented member candidate, Roslyn Jackson, (along with Willie Strickland), wrote a song while pledging. The song, sang to the tune of "Beautiful Dreamer" was such a hit that it was nominated to become the sweetheart song for Eta Phi Beta Sorority. The year of 1976 was another great milestone as Alpha Gamma hosted the 12th Grand Boule, under the national leadership of Grand National President Alma D. AIexander and Chapter President Roslyn Jackson. SHAD William Jackson established SHAD Club #25 of Miami, which is comprised of the supportive, devoted husbands of the lovely Alpha Gamma members. Another remarkable accomplishment has been through the efforts of the Youth Group. Since 1970, and under the national initiative, Alpha Gamma works with youth through the Bee-Ettes and Senords. Alpha Gamma Chapter has continued to develop programs and activities that have played an integral part in meeting community goals with signature affairs such as, Candlelight Vesper Service; Thanksgiving Donations; tutoring children through Dade Partners; Annual Hobo and White Dances, Walk-a-Thons for Scholarships; Donations to the National Council of Negro Women, United Negro College Fund, Landmark Developmental Disabled Adults, March of Dimes, and Easter Seals.
