The road that led Larry Little to his status as a hall of famer began on the football field of Booker T. Washington High School in the 1960s. Little’s talents continued to shine after he graduated and went on to attend Bethune-Cookman College (now Bethune-Cookman University) where he played as a two-way tackle, team captain, and an All Conference choice.
Little’s professional football career began in 1967 with the San Diego Chargers. In 1969, Little was traded to Miami where his professional football career flourished. In Miami, Little immediately won the starting right guard position and played a key role in the Miami Dolphin’s legendary 1970s domination which took them to three straight Super Bowls in 1971, 1972, and 1973. Little played 12 seasons with the Miami Dolphins where he earned All-Pro honors six times and was a five-time Pro Bowl selection. In addition to the many distinctions he earned, Little was the first Floridian Miami Dolphin player to be inducted into the Florida Sports Hall of Fame. After retiring from football, he went on to coach at his alma mater, Bethune-Cookman College from 1985 to 1991. In 1992, Larry became the first African American Coach of the World League, the Ohio Glory. He also served as Head Coach for North Carolina Central University from 1993-1998. In 1993 Larry was inducted in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
Off the field, Little is a gentle giant who is compassionate about the South Florida community and its youth. Over the years, he has received more than 200 community service awards. For 15 years, Little and partners operated the Larry Little Gold Coast Summer Camp for underprivileged kids in Miami-Dade County. From 2007 to 2012, Little was an active supporter of the ongoing restoration of the Historic Virginia Key Beach Park, a national historic site established in 1945 as the only public beach black people were allowed to visit in Dade County. Little also lends support to numerous non-profit organizations including the Cystic Fibrosis Association of Miami and the Swim for Jenny Memorial Fund. He is presently employed with Miami-Dade County Public Schools.
