Abstract

The Reverend Joseph Baron Silas was born February 20, 1942 in Valdosta, Georgia. After relocating to Florida in elementary school, Silas spent his teenagers in Miami where he began Miami Northwestern Senior High School.

After graduating from Florida Memorial University with a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice, Silas became active in Miami-Dade county. Silas co-founded the Federation of Black Employees in addition to be an ordained minister at the Allen Chapel sector of the African Methodist Episcopal Church

The Reverend Joseph Baron Silas Collection was donated his granddaughter, Regina Thomas.

Acquisition Source: Regina Thomas

Acquisition Method: After viewing the file names written by the preceding Archivist Donette Manning, I (India Ferguson), picked off where she left and began to label folders 6 through 9. I would like to note that file folder #7 titled: "Official Reports" has relevant information papers that are directly related to file folder #3: "Federation Black Employees". In addition, the images in file folder #8 titled "Photographs", were not given individually labeled. There are 13 non-original images that copied using a printer scanner onto 8x11 paper. In total this collection contains 3 boxes. Box 1 contains 9 folders, Box 2 contains 3 bottles of hair care products that were created by Joseph Silas' himself under the name: JBS Maximum Hair Care System. More specifically Box 2 contains: 2 Oil Sheen and Comb Out Conditioners as well as 1 Super Gro Grease. Box #3 contains 2 official letters of Resolution and 1 cloth item: Joseph Silas' black cloak, A signed resolution from the Miami-Dade County mayor and lastly, a resolution from the city of Opa-Locka.
