Name: Nabawi, Jermiah

Historical Note: Jermiah Nabawi is a story teller, folk artist, and musical artist born in Philadelphia. He became a story teller in 1986, during which year he founded Hola Kumba Ya, an inter-cultural group established to preserve the oral tradition of storytelling and other folk arts, with Linda Goss. He is also founder of the William J. Faulkner Friends of Folklore, Inc., whose mission is to perpetuate the African American tradition of oral history. He received a degree in Foreign Language and ESL Studies from UCLA, a Certificate in proficiency for teaching English as a foreign language from the Mexican Department of Education, and has a background in film and theater. He has had residencies throughout the United States in over 15 elementary schools and 4 high schools. He appeared in the movie “The Evil that Men Do,” with Charles Bronson, the late Raymond St. Jacques, and Annette Bower, and has worked with Los Angeles Repertory Workshop, the International Children’s Theater, the English Language Theater in Mexico and performed in several radio plays in Philadelphia.
