Juanita Mann, more commonly referred to as “Nurse Mann,” was instrumental in acquiring health care facilities for the underprivileged in migrant camps in Bella Glade, Florida. She began their first medical clinic for indigent people. In 1954, after working diligently in the Palm Beach County area, Nurse Mann moved to Dade County where she became a health official.

Juanita Williams was born in West Palm Beach, Florida on March 10, 1914. She later met and married Morrial Mann and although they had no children of their own, she was instrumental in rearing four youngsters.

Nurse Mann touched the lives of many students as she worked throughout the school system in Liberty City and Brownsville. She was instrumental in providing students with greatly-needed medical services and information. Even in that time, when access to education was more difficult to obtain, she encouraged unwed mothers to continue their education and to enhance their skills.

Nurse Mann is quoted as saying, “I let people around me know that they can come to me or that I will go to them when they need me.”

The Dade County Department of Health, Juanita Mann Center, located in the Northside Shopping Center, is named in her honor.
