Scope and Contents of the Materials

This collection includes obituaries, programs, and newspaper articles pertaining to the life of Vivian E. Long. It was donated by her son Harry M. Long.

Collection Historical Note

Born in 1925 to Claude and Elsaida Gardner in Miami, Fl; Mrs. Long was a faithful member of Bethany Seventh-Day Adventist Church attending the school while still in her youth. From there Vivian graduated from Dorsey High School and went on to enroll and graduate from Oakwood College located in Huntsville,Alabama. She obtained her degree in Business Science. Long made her mark in the school system working as a school secretary at both Brownsville Middle School and North Dade High School. She ultimately would work at the Miami-Dade Administration office. She married Herbert C. Long in September of 1947. Over her lifetime Mr. and Mrs Long gave many years of service and support to Bethany Junior Academy and later Miami Union Academy when the two schools merged. For this service, Miami Union Academy dedicated the Herbert and Vivian Long Early Childhood Department at the school in their honor.
