Scope and Contents of the Materials
This collection consists of the papers of Dr. Gilbert Lawrence Porter, educator, donated by Dr. Porter and his daughter in the 1980s, and supplemented with information collected by The Black Archives. It documents his life as a father, principal, and education administrator between 1933 and 1991. The papers include photographs, correspondence, event ephemera, printed materials, and biographical information. Photographs are photocopies. Photographs include pictures of D.A. Dorsey and The Chapman House.
Biographical Note
Dr. Gilbert Lawrence Porter was born in 1909 in Baldwin City, Kansas. He received his B.A. degree in Chemistry at Talladega College, M.A. degree in Educational Administration from The University of Michigan and his Ph.D. and Post Doctoral Degree from Ohio State University. In 1933, he became principle of Tivoli Junior High School in DeFuniak Springs, Florida. He also was an Instructor in Education at Florida A & M University. In 1954, Dr. Porter became one of the first full-time paid Executive Secretaries for the Florida State Teacher's Association (the black counterpart to the Florida Education Association), where he served fifteen years. He co-authored a book entitled "History of the Florida State Teachers Association" with Leedell W. Neyland in 1977. Dr. Porter helped to establish Alpha Rho Boule of Sigma Pi Phi Fraternity in Miami 1965. He was elected to the Board of Trustees of the United Protestant Appeal in 1985. Dr. Gilbert Lawrence Porter was a member of the following organizations: National Education Association, Florida Education Association, American Association of School Administrators, Board of Directors Florida Council on Human Relations, United Negro College Fund, Miami Chapter March of Dimes, Phi Delta Kappa Fraternity, Delegate to White House Conference on Children and Youth, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, and Sigma Pi Phi Fraternity. Dr. Porter is the past President of The Black Archives, History and Research Foundation of South Florida, Inc.
