Volunteering
The Black Archives Volunteer and Internship Program provides individuals with opportunities to develop skills and competencies through hands on training in the fields of archival administration/museum science and office administration. Volunteer and intern opportunities include: archives administration, exhibit curation (including digital exhibits), docent work, stage management, and front office related activities.
Archival Administration/Museum Science Internships
An archival administration/museum science internship at The Black Archives will complement the following degree programs: Archival Administration, Museum Science, Library and Information Science, Anthropology, Political Science, History, Urban Planning, Women’s Studies, Ethnic Studies, African Studies and African American Studies.
Archival administration/museum science interns and volunteers assist archivists with:
- Appraising, arranging, describing and preserving collections
- Preserving three dimensional objects
- Exhibit preparation
- Digitization
Archival administration/museum science interns and volunteers learn about:
- The concept of culture, society and history as a fundamental organizing idea
- Social change and the impact of social change on human cultures and society and over time
- The role of history in engaging the community
- Cultural linkages, and the social geography of people of African heritage in the South Florida African Diaspora.
To Apply
To become an independent intern or volunteer, submit a resume and a letter of intent describing your interest in volunteering at The Black Archives, and fill out an Intern/Volunteer Contact Form. In-person interviews are conducted before interns or volunteers are approved. Interns and volunteers from partnering organizations must have a referral sheet.
Educational institutions, employment agencies and service organizations interested in partnering with The Black Archives should the Black Archives at baf@theblackarchives[dot]org or call (305) 636-2390. The organization must be an officially recognized business entity.
